(not pictured) Michael Menjivar.On Thursday, March 23, 2017, eleven Smithfield-Selma High School (SSS) scholars were inducted into the prestigious Mu Alpha Theta organization: Olivia Price, Lillian Canady, Kayla Canady, Emma Creech, Nkemdirim Obodo, Gwyn Reece, Leigh Dement, Lane Baggett, Nathan Kiser, Erich Hess, and Michael Menjivar.

Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School & Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society.  Geared towards inspiring interest and study in mathematics, this organization offers scholarships, provides mathematics competitions, and organizes a national convention.

Students who are accepted into Mu Alpha Theta must complete an application, earned a GPA of at least 3.5, have taken at least one math class every year in which they earned an A (at least a B if it's an honors class), have two math teacher recommendations, and demonstrate community service.
